Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT for insomnia involves assessment and modification of thoughts, behaviors and environmental conditions that affect sleep.

We examine such issues as “sleep hygiene”(your sleeping environment and behaviors near bedtime), behaviors earlier in the day that may negatively or positively affect sleep, your thoughts about sleep, and your behaviors in response to sleep difficulties.

We will also consider your use of medications and other substances that may affect sleep.

CBT-I has been shown to have more lasting benefits for sleep than sleep medications, which can have undesirable side effects and diminished efficacy when they are used over too long a time.  Most sleep medications are meant for short-term use.
