Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an innovative approach to treating trauma and other issues that involves using directed eye movements to reduce emotional discomfort and change maladaptive attitudes about oneself. I was initially trained in this therapy by the psychologist who developed it, Francine Shapiro, in 1992 and 1993, and I have used it since with many clients. There have been numerous published studies establishing the efficacy of this therapy, especially in treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

EMDR can help resolve disturbances from past events and reduce uncomfortable responses to current and anticipated events. There are numerous ways in which the procedure can be helpfully varied to fit a specific situation.  It can be used to help people develop and access internal emotional resources.  But like any other psychological (or medical) treatment, it may not be appropriate for everyone. It is a complex process that can be misapplied, either because the therapist is implementing it unskillfully or using it with an issue or client for which it is inappropriate.
